Dear Friends,

When we made the decision to close all of our stores on March 18th, we didn’t furlough anybody – in fact, all employees stayed on at full pay. We did this before the Paycheck Protection Program existed, and before we knew government aid of any kind would be coming. Our decision was based on doing what was right by our employees, and all of our decisions since have been in service of this same goal.

It soon became clear that the pandemic was going to last longer than anyone had initially expected. On April 4th, we made the extremely painful decision to furlough a portion of our employees. We kept on our remaining staff at full pay, and to-date have retained roughly 65% of our entire workforce at full pay.

When the CARES Act and PPP loans were announced, we were very excited. Receiving a loan not only meant that we could continue to keep paying the remaining staff on payroll, it meant that we could also rehire all of the employees that had been furloughed. We never considered how intense the competition for the loans would be and applied for one immediately, so that we could continue paying our employees even though all of our stores were closed. We were genuinely excited for all restaurants – more restaurant jobs were lost than in any other industry, and this was great news for everyone in our industry.

Very early in the CARES Act, there’s an explicit exemption in qualification criteria for businesses with the North American Industry Classification System code 72 – accommodation and food services. Given that this was an explicit change from previous SBA criteria, we and others interpreted this as a deliberate effort by lawmakers to further support the restaurant industry, whether you have one or multiple restaurants. With the Paycheck Protection Program, we assumed all restaurant employees would be able to continue being paid, regardless of where they worked, and that the funds would be enough for everyone. This was a wrong assumption.

Today, we made the decision to return our PPP loan. This was a difficult decision because our employees are extremely important to us, but it’s impossible to ignore the fact that our finances allow us to weather financial hardship for a longer period than independent restaurant owners. We hope that these funds will be shared equitably among deserving candidates.

Sincerely,

Jimmy Uba
President and CEO

Dear Friends and Valued Guests,

We hope everyone is staying safe and healthy at this time. In compliance with announcements made over the last few days, our stores will not open on the previously indicated dates listed below. Currently, all of our stores are closed until further notice. We will be following the recommendations of local health authorities in each region and provide updates once we receive them. Thank you so much for your continued patience and support.

Updated 3/18/20

Dear Friends and Valued Guests,

At Kura Sushi, the health and well-being of our guests and team members have always been our highest priority. In light of the ongoing situation with COVID-19 and the recommendations of local, state, and federal health authorities, we are temporarily closing all of our stores. This was a difficult decision for us, but we feel that this was the best way for us to serve our guests, team members, and communities under the current circumstances.

We are following the recommendations of local health authorities in terms of how long restaurants need to be closed in different regions:

We will continue to update you as we learn new information, and we can’t wait to serve you again soon.

Updated 3/17/20

Dear Friends and Valued Guests,

We at Kura Sushi have always placed the health, safety, and well-being of our guests and our team members as our top priority. We have always prided ourselves on our rigorous, technology-driven food safety measures which include:

  • Our patented “Mr. Fresh” domes, designed to protect each plate on the belt, and
  • Our robotic arms in the kitchen that automatically dispose plates that do not satisfy our freshness standards, which are higher than those required by health department regulations. Each plate is timed and monitored by RFID tags.

In addition, to help ensure that we are doing everything possible to protect the health and welfare of our guests and our employees, we have implemented the following:

  • We have increased the frequency of our cleaning and sanitization procedures and have confirmed that our disinfectants are EPA-approved for effectiveness against COVID-19, and
  • We have developed Coronavirus education for our team members to reemphasize existing protocols and incorporate new best practices for food safety and personal health, and
  • We have established an emergency catastrophe leave fund for employees. The well-being of our team members includes financial security, especially in these uncertain times.

We understand that this is a fluid situation, and are closely monitoring governmental and health authority recommendations to make sure that our health and safety procedures are as rigorous as possible. Over the last several days, some local governments have issued notices that all residents must stay home or that all restaurants must close. In compliance with these announcements, we have temporarily closed the following restaurants.

The following restaurants will remain open, but will temporarily serve food only through the express belt in order to streamline kitchen operations and provide a better experience for our guests.
